Counseling is based on a safe, positive, and confidential relationship between the client and counselor. Although teenagers are minors, they have the right to confidentiality. Disclosure of information (to parents for example) is only done with the client’s consent, or in times where the counselor believes the client is a danger to him/herself or to others.

Forming a strong and trusting relationship between client and counselor is key to successful therapy. Together the client and counselor look closely at the issue at hand and dig deep for understanding. The counselor supports the client as he or she asks hard questions, works through challenges, and begins to implement changes.
